White limescale deposits on a tap — the most visible sign of hard water

In brief

  • • White marks on taps and shower
  • • Dry skin and dull hair
  • • Rough laundry and faded colours
  • • Excess soap and detergent use
  • • Frequent appliance breakdowns
  • • Solution: LIMPEO reduces scale by 88%

How to tell if your water is too hard

In France, 80% of households are supplied with hard water (above 15°f). But how can you tell without having your water tested? Here are the 5 telltale signs that your water contains too much limescale — and above all, how to remedy the situation.

Sign #1: White marks on taps and shower

This is the most visible sign. Whitish deposits appear on taps, shower screens, shower heads and around sinks. These marks are calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) that precipitates when water evaporates. The harder your water, the faster and more stubborn these deposits become.

Quick test: if you have to scrub hard with vinegar to remove the marks, your water is probably above 25°f.

Sign #2: Dry skin and dull hair after showering

Hard water leaves an invisible mineral film on your skin and hair. The result:

  • Skin that feels tight, dry, sometimes irritated
  • Dull, rough hair that is difficult to style
  • Worsening of eczema and dermatitis in sensitive individuals

This film prevents moisturising products from penetrating properly. Read also: Hard water, dry skin and dull hair.

Sign #3: Rough laundry and faded colours

Limescale deposits in fabric fibres during washing:

  • Towels become rough and stiff
  • Colours fade faster
  • White clothes take on a greyish tinge
  • Laundry smells less fresh despite detergent

This phenomenon is caused by the interaction between calcium ions and the surfactants in detergent, which form insoluble soaps trapped in the fibres.

Sign #4: Excess soap and detergent use

Hard water significantly reduces the effectiveness of soap. Calcium ions neutralise surfactants, forcing you to use more product to achieve the same lather and cleaning power. This applies to:

  • Soap and shower gel
  • Shampoo
  • Laundry detergent
  • Washing-up liquid
  • Household cleaning products

Some studies estimate that households with hard water use 30 to 50% more product than those with soft water.

Sign #5: Frequent appliance breakdowns

Limescale is the number one enemy of your appliances:

  • Kettle — White deposits at the bottom, longer heating time
  • Coffee machine — Frequent descaling required, altered taste
  • Dishwasher — White marks on crockery, scaled heating element
  • Washing machine — Calcified heating element, higher energy consumption
  • Water heater — Lifespan reduced by half (read: Water heater lifespan and limescale)

Limescale reduces appliance lifespan by 30 to 50% and increases energy consumption (read: Limescale costs you 25% on your energy bill).

How to check your water hardness

  • qualite-eau.fr — The official portal of the French Ministry of Health. Enter your municipality.
  • Your water bill — The average hardness is often indicated.
  • Test strips — Available at pharmacies or aquarium shops.
  • LIMPEO map — Consult our hard water map of France.

The solution: LIMPEO electromagnetic treatment

LIMPEO, designed by JAEGER SAS, uses electromagnetic waves to transform calcite into aragonite, preventing limescale from depositing. The result:

  • 88% reduction in limescalescientifically validated
  • No more white marks on taps
  • Softer skin, shinier hair
  • Softer laundry, colours preserved
  • Protected appliances, extended lifespan
  • 10-minute installation, zero maintenance for 10 years

FAQ — Signs of hard water

At what hardness level does water cause problems?

The first visible effects generally appear above 15°f. Above 25°f, limescale accumulates rapidly and all 5 signs become obvious. Above 35°f, the impact on equipment is critical.

Is hard water dangerous for health?

No. Calcium and magnesium are essential minerals. Drinking hard water is not harmful. The problem is technical: limescale damages equipment and increases energy consumption.

Does LIMPEO eliminate white marks?

LIMPEO significantly reduces limescale deposits (88%). Existing marks become easier to clean and new deposits are virtually non-existent. The water retains its natural minerals.

How long before results are visible?

The preventive effect is immediate. Existing deposits become friable and easy to clean within 2 to 4 weeks. The most visible results appear on taps and shower screens.

How do I test my water hardness?

The most reliable method: consult qualite-eau.fr with your municipality name. For an instant test, hardness test strips are available at pharmacies or aquarium shops.
